Selecting the Right Glassware for Champagne & Wine

Glassware

What to Use — and Why It Matters

Most people assume Champagne is all about what's in the bottle.

I've learnt that the glass matters almost as much.

The right glass doesn't just look beautiful. It changes what you smell, what you taste, and even how long the bubbles stay lively.

The good news is you don't need a cupboard full of expensive glasses. Just knowing when to reach for each style makes a surprising difference.

The good news is you don't need a cupboard full of expensive glasses. You simply need the right glass for the wine you're pouring.

THE BEST GLASS FOR CHAMPAGNE

WHITE WINE GLASS

Best overall choice

Why it works

  • Allows aroma to develop
  • Shows texture and complexity
  • Lets Champagne behave like wine

When to use it

  • With food
  • For vintage Champagne
  • For prestige or grower bottles
  • When you want to truly taste the wine

At My Table
If you use one glass for Champagne, make it a white wine glass.

CHAMPAGNE TULIP

Designed specifically for Champagne

Why it works

  • Narrower opening keeps bubbles alive
  • Wider bowl than a flute allows aroma

When to use it

  • Aperitif moments
  • When you want elegance with function
  • When serving several styles in one sitting

At My Table
Tulips are a beautiful compromise between elegance and expression.

FLUTES

Acceptable — with limitations

Why people use them

  • They look celebratory
  • They keep bubbles visible

Where they fall short

  • Trap aroma
  • Limit texture and depth

When they’re fine

  • Large gatherings
  • Standing events
  • Casual celebrations

At My Table
Flutes are not wrong — they’re just not ideal.

COUPES

Beautiful, but impractical

Why they disappoint

  • Bubbles disappear quickly
  • Aroma escapes immediately

When to use them

  • For visual moments only
  • If the experience is more aesthetic than tasting

At My Table
Coupes are for photographs, not serious Champagne.

WHAT YOU DON’T NEED TO DO

  • You do not need matching sets
  • You do not need Champagne-specific glassware
  • You do not need to buy new glasses to host well
  • Clean, clear glasses that feel good in the hand matter more than perfection.

HOW FULL TO POUR

Regardless of glass:

  • Fill to one-third or halfway
  • This allows aroma to open
  • It keeps the Champagne fresh
  • You can always top up — that’s more generous than over-pouring.

Zelda’s Table Note

Good glassware disappears into the experience.

If the wine feels comfortable in the glass, you notice the Champagne — not the vessel.

WHAT I USE AT LUXE MAHA

If you've joined me for one of my experiences, you've probably noticed I almost always reach for a white wine glass.

It allows the Champagne to open beautifully and gives guests a much better sense of its aroma than a narrow flute.

I still enjoy flutes on special occasions, but if I'm serving a great bottle, I want the wine to have room to speak.
