CHAMPAGNE FAQ
The Questions People Are Afraid to Ask
If you’ve ever hesitated before opening a bottle, ordering Champagne, or asking a question — you’re not alone.
This page answers the most common Champagne questions in a clear, practical, non-judgemental way. There are no silly questions here. If you’ve wondered it, someone else has too.
IS IT OKAY TO DRINK CHAMPAGNE OUT OF A FLUTE?
Yes.
Flutes are fine, especially for celebrations and large gatherings.
That said, a white wine glass or tulip will show more aroma and texture.
If flutes are what you have, use them confidently.
DOES EXPENSIVE CHAMPAGNE ALWAYS TASTE BETTER?
No.
Price reflects many things — brand, ageing, rarity — but not personal enjoyment.
Many people prefer a well-made Non-Vintage Brut over a prestige cuvée.
The best Champagne is the one you enjoy drinking.
SHOULD CHAMPAGNE ALWAYS BE FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS?
No.
Champagne is one of the most food-friendly wines in the world and works beautifully at the table.
Opening Champagne doesn’t need justification — it can create the occasion.
HOW LONG CAN I KEEP AN OPEN BOTTLE?
With a proper Champagne stopper:
- 24–48 hours in the fridge
- Sometimes up to 3 days for fresher styles
- Without a stopper, Champagne will lose bubbles quickly.
CAN I USE A SPOON IN THE BOTTLE TO KEEP THE BUBBLES?
No.
This is a myth.
A proper Champagne stopper is the only reliable way to preserve fizz.
WHY DOES SOME CHAMPAGNE TASTE TOO SHARP?
Usually one of three reasons:
- very low dosage
- served too cold
- not matched with food
Letting the wine warm slightly or pairing with food often fixes this.
IS ROSÉ CHAMPAGNE SWEETER THAN WHITE?
Not necessarily.
Colour does not indicate sweetness.
Dosage determines sweetness — not colour.
CAN I PAIR CHAMPAGNE WITH A FULL MEAL?
Absolutely.
Champagne pairs especially well with:
- seafood
- roast chicken
- eggs and brunch dishes
- cheese
- salty and savoury food
It often works better than still wine.
WHAT’S THE SAFEST CHAMPAGNE TO SERVE TO A MIXED GROUP?
Non-Vintage Brut.
It’s balanced, versatile, food-friendly, and widely enjoyed.
SHOULD I DECANT CHAMPAGNE?
Usually no.
Decanting can flatten bubbles and remove freshness.
Only very old or highly structured Champagnes benefit — and only with experience.
IS IT OKAY IF I DON’T LIKE A PARTICULAR CHAMPAGNE?
Yes.
Taste is personal.
Disliking a Champagne doesn’t mean you “don’t like Champagne” — it usually means the style wasn’t right for you.
